10 years of Better Futures!

This year marked 10 years since the Better Futures system was launched to assist providers of housing support to record and track outcomes of their services at an individual level.  The development of the system was funded by the Scottish Government and involved a variety of stakeholders throughout the design phase, including service providers, commissioners and the Care Inspectorate.

10 years later the system is used by 40 organisations across Scotland and holds over 45,000 records.  There have been various developments to the system over the years and the most recent one enables people using support to access their own record online so they can view and update the information it holds.

The Unit held two events in November to mark this achievement:

  1. Blue Triangle is Supporting Better Futures, 3rd November

Iain Macfarlane, CEO and Lesley Munro, Area Manager set out how Blue Triangle has used Better Futures over the last 10 years to deliver vital support to people facing homelessness.

Blue Triangle was involved in the original design and development of Better Futures – indeed Lesley Munro was among those who spoke at the launch event in 2011.  Blue Triangle uses Better to record individual outcomes; aggregates data to assist with service development; provide data to support staff supervision and staff development and it produces reports for service commissioners.  Now the organisation is undertaking a digital transformation programme and Better Futures is very much at the heart of that.

  1. Supporting Better Futures for All – the Care Inspectorate and the Scottish Social Services Council, 9th November

This session consisted of the following:

  1. a) Claire Pierce, Service Manager (Adults) from the Care Inspectorate set out the importance of focusing on outcomes and reflecting on how the regulator has responded to the pandemic and how it is planning to further develop its approach to regulation. The Better Futures system is regarded to be a good way of demonstrating outcomes by the regulator.

b)George Burton, Learning and Development Adviser from the Scottish Social Services Council presented the Continuous Professional Learning (CPL) system and how Better Futures can be used to demonstrate CPL.
