Workforce Unit & Tayforth Social Services Learning Network - CPD event

Taking place on 24 June in Stirling, this half day learning event is the first in a series of events the Workforce Unit and Tayforth Social Services Learning Network will be running to support the implementation of the Continuous Learning Framework. This event is aimed at social service managers registered or due to register with the SSSC.

It will support you to plan to meet the Post Registration and Training Requirements (PRTL) for
yourself and your team. More than this, it will enable you to consider the learning environment
you are creating and supporting for yourself and your staff groups. It will specifically refresh your
knowledge of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) concepts and help you plan your
leadership approach to developing learning within your team. This learning event will count
towards your own PRTL.

This event will be facilitated by Bev Mealyer, Learning Dynamic (www.learningdynamic.com)
and has been designed in partnership with VSSSWU. Bev is an experienced Organisation and
Learning and Development professional. She is known for a style that is about working in
partnership with people to facilitate change and brings with her a commitment to developing

Modern Apprenticeships Consultation - Edinburgh, 24th October 2006

The Workforce Unit will be hosting an event to discuss the current consultation on Modern Apprenticeships.  This event will take place in Edinburgh on Tuesday 24th October between 10.30-12.30pm and a lunch will be provided. If you would like to attend please contact Laura Weir at vswu.admin@ccpscotland.org

Background

The Scottish Executive has published a consultation with the aim of improving the Modern Apprenticeship Programme (MAs). Since its introduction in the mid 1990s the programme has gone from strength to strength. Originally designed as a tool to support a valid and structured mechanism for developing young people's skills and competence in the workplace, it has evolved into a far broader programme.

Employers quickly identified the benefits of this approach and have enthusiastically used MAs as an integral component of their workforce development strategies, so much so that there are now around 16,000 employers actively engaged in the MA programme. Against this background, the Executive aims to refine the current MA programme and ensure it is fit for the needs of the 21st century.

The overall number of Modern Apprenticeships in Health and Social Care will be reduced by around 50% for 2006/07.  It is therefore crucial that the voluntary sector offer their contributions on the impact and benefits of these programmes in the social services sector.

The consultation can be downloaded from

Workforce Development Network Event - Stirling, 28th September 2005

One of the outcomes of our discussions with you at our roadshows has been a request for some ownership of the work of the unit by the voluntary sector.  To this end we would like not only to support existing networks, but to establish a Workforce Development Network to optimise collaboration and consultation with you.

Please do sign up to this network, which will consult by letter, email and through meetings, seminars and events.  Such a network will provide a source of individuals and organisations upon whom we can call when advice, support and knowledge are needed from those of you directly in touch with issues as they affect the sector, and in turn provide you with a forum for discussion and collaboration with both the Unit and colleagues who share similar interests within the sector.

All we are asking for at this stage is an initial sign up to the network.  A short questionnaire will then be emailed to you so that we can find out about your specific interests, and gauge the level of involvement that you would envisage taking in this network.  Participation will be at a level that suits you.  Your help will greatly enhance the effectiveness of the Unit’s work.  Be reassured that even if you do not sign up to the network, you will continue to receive mailings from the unit and the opportunity to attend unit events.

The inaugural meeting of the network will be taking place in Stirling on 28th September.
