First steps in Marketing: a practical approach to raising the profile of Housing Support services

It is increasingly important to develop and maintain a positive profile of services in order to attract and sustain funding. Whether local authorities or individual service users with their own budgets are your funders - and possibly it is a mix of both - it is necessary to review and try out different ways to get your message across.

If promoting your service is part of your job this course will provide you with tools and ideas that will help you raise the profile of your organisation. Our approach is based on the knowledge that a lot of organisations have limited marketing resources so that any marketing strategy they develop has to be realistic and relevant to achieve the desired results.

The day will involve both theory and practice:

1. The theoretical part

Participants will be introduced to the basic marketing concepts and terminology which will be used in the more practical parts of the course. The concepts discussed will include the 4Ps of marketing (Product, Price, Place, Promotion), the Promotional Mix, Unique Selling Point, understanding your customers, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and direct marketing.

Expected outcomes:

  • Participants will understand the range of marketing tools available to them
  • Participants will be able to identify the needs of their customers and choose marketing tools most appropriate to their organisation.

2. The practical part

Participants will gain the skills necessary to implement their own marketing strategy. This part will consist of a combination of exercises (both group work and individual work) and discussion of case studies.

Expected outcomes:

  • Participants will critically evaluate their current marketing activities
  • Participants will have a go at designing their own marketing strategy
  • Participants will be able to look at the more technical aspects of marketing strategy implementation

Our trainer, Agnieszka Swida, who is the Business Development Consultant with Forth Sector Development, also delivered the first of our marketing courses earlier this year and some of the comments extracted from the delegates' evaluations of the course were:-

  • Very well presented
  • Facilitator was excellent
  • Good balance of group discussion and presentation
  • Gave me real ideas and practical tools to take things forward
