With the roll out of Universal Credit more people living in supported housing are having to claim UC for their daily living costs and, as long as they are deemed to live in a form of exempt accommodation (or Specified Accommodation), they can claim housing benefits for their housing costs.
After many years of reviewing the way HB deals with supported housing the UK Government decided not to make fundamental changes to the system in August last year. There could, however, be some changes in the way the system is administered which could impact on Scotland in the future and so we need to remain vigilant.
Last year, the Housing Support Enabling Unit facilitated a discussion between providers and the Department for Work and Pensions and this provided an opportunity to highlight the delays some tenants had experienced.
The purpose of this meeting is to update and share knowledge and insight into the way the UC system and the HB system are working together; it will also set out the challenges associated with the roll out of UC faced by supported housing services and those that live there. At the end of the meeting there will be an opportunity to agree key points and agree areas for further examination or action that the HSEU can assist you by taking forward.
